Who we are
We are MancheSTAR Fusion Society aiming to be the bridge between academia and students.
MancheSTAR is the UK’s first student-led fusion society, founded by undergraduate students at the University of Manchester.
Our aims
- Provide all members of the University of Manchester with opportunities to learn about fusion
- Connect members to industry partners
- Develop skills relevant to the fusion industry
- Raise interest in future career pathways for people of all backgrounds
How we work
The society is led and directed by an executive committee that is elected annually by members of the society.
The society is then broken up into three taskforces for members to join:
- Education
- Industry
- Projects
Each taskforce holds weekly sessions, which are led by their respective leads, who guide the direction of the sessions and report progress to the committee.
Education
The education taskforce organises the society lecture series, covering topics from reactor design, to plasma physics, as well as organising guest speakers for members to learn from. This equips our members with the knowledge they need to step into the fusion industry.
Industry
The industry taskforce organises the society’s events, such as trips or conferences, contacts industry partners, and produces budgets, helping members develop soft skills as well as build connections with the industry.
Projects
The projects taskforce organises the society’s projects, this involves organising workshops, project opportunities, such as the Tabletop Fusor. This gives members opportunities to apply their theoretical knowledge in more practical settings, outlining real-world challenges.
